Gary McPhail currently teaches first and second grade at Shady Hill School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He has taught in the primary grades for 11 years. In 2008, McPhail received his doctorate from Boston College. In an attempt to address the gendered achievement gap in writing that exists both nationally and internationally, McPhail conducted a yearlong teacher research dissertation focused on the gendered literacy interests of his 1st-grade students and how they responded to a writing curriculum he created that included genres intended to be of interest to both boys and girls. Based on his findings, McPhail is currently leading a group of teacher researchers featuring one teacher from every grade level at Shady Hill. This group is inquiring into their own practice and working to create a schoolwide writing curriculum that is of interest to a variety of young, budding writers. His publications include Faculty First: The Challenge of Infusing the Teacher Education Curriculum with Scholarship on English Language Learners (co-authored with J. Costa, J. Smith, and M. E. Brisk).
